What a good sleep timer actually does

The single feature that decides whether you finish an audiobook, and why most implementations get it wrong.

Listening to something as you fall asleep is one of the most common uses of an audiobook app and one of the least considered. Almost every player has a sleep timer. Very few have one that works, and the difference shows up as a chapter you have to re-listen to three nights running.

Cutting is the wrong behaviour

The naive timer waits thirty minutes and stops the audio. Two problems follow. A sudden silence is itself a thing your brain notices, which can wake you at exactly the moment you were going under. And you have no idea where you were, because the last thing you remember consciously was twenty minutes before the timer fired.

A good timer does two things instead. It fades the volume over sixty to a hundred and twenty seconds, so the audio leaves rather than stops. And when you open the app again it has rewound, usually by a few minutes, to somewhere before your attention went.

The end-of-chapter option

The better players offer an alternative to a fixed time: stop at the end of the current chapter. For fiction this is often the right choice, because chapter breaks are where an author already put a pause.

Shake to extend

A small feature with a large effect: if you are still awake when the fade starts, a shake or a tap adds another interval without making you find the phone, unlock it and locate the control. Getting the screen out in a dark room is itself enough to undo the last ten minutes.

Where your place is stored

None of the above matters if your position lives only on the device. Check whether the app syncs position to an account. If it does not, changing phones costs you every bookmark and every part-finished book you have.

How to test one in five minutes

  1. Set the timer to one minute and listen to what happens at the end. Cut or fade?
  2. Reopen the app. Did it rewind, and by how much?
  3. Look for an end-of-chapter option in the same menu.
  4. Check the settings for a sync or account section.

Four checks, five minutes, and it tells you more about whether you will finish books in this app than any review will.
