Streaming rights in Canada, and why your tracker is wrong

You look up a film, the app says it is on a service you pay for, you open that service and it is not there. This is not a bug in the app. It is the app answering a question about a different country.

Rights are sold territory by territory

A distributor does not sell “streaming”. It sells streaming in Canada, for a period, sometimes exclusively and sometimes not. The same title can be on one service in Canada, a different one in the United States, and nowhere at all in a third country, all in the same week. Catalogues also shift at the start of a month more than at any other time, because that is when many windows begin and end.

How to tell what your tracker assumes

• Look for a region setting. If there is none, it has one region and it is almost certainly the United States.
• Check a known Canadian difference. Pick a title you know sits on a different service here than in the US and see which answer you get.
• Look for the Canadian-only services. A tool that has never heard of the domestic streamers is not tracking this market.
• Check whether it distinguishes included from rental. “Available” meaning “you can pay six dollars to rent it” is not the same answer.

Bilingual catalogues

French-language availability in Canada is frequently different again, with its own services and its own windows. If you watch in French, a tracker that folds everything into one national answer will be wrong more often than it is right.

What to do about it

Set the region before you trust a single answer, and prefer tools that show the service and whether the title is included in a subscription or rented. Where a tracker lets you list the services you actually pay for, do it: the useful answer is never “it is on eleven platforms”, it is “it is on the one you already have”.
